PVC Floor Care: Cleaning & Waxing Step-by-Step Guide

Dec 06 , 2025

I. Introduction

Plastic (PVC) flooring is widely used in public places such as commercial spaces, hospitals, and schools due to its wear resistance, water resistance, and easy cleaning. Over time, dust, oil stains, and old wax residues will appear on the surface. If not maintained in time, it will lead to reduced gloss and increased wear. Regular cleaning + waxing can not only restore the bright appearance but also extend the service life, which is a key part of flooring maintenance.

II. Preparation

Item

Key Points

Tools

Vacuum cleaner/dust mop, soft brush, wet mop, special cleaner, wax water (diluted 1:10), waxing machine or special wax mop, water suction machine, dry cloth, polishing machine (optional)

Cleaners

Neutral, non-acid/alkaline, special plastic floor cleaner; avoid strong acid, strong alkali, or solvent-based glue removers

Safety

Wear protective gloves and masks; ensure ventilation on-site; set up warning tapes or signs in the work area

Environment

Keep the floor dry; avoid direct strong light; the temperature is best between 15-30°C; avoid high temperatures that cause uneven wax film

III. Cleaning Steps

  1. Dusting

    • Use a vacuum cleaner or dust mop to thoroughly remove dust and debris from the floor.
    • Repeatedly clean dead corners (e.g., corners, walls) to ensure no residue.
  2. Wet Wiping

    • Dilute the neutral cleaner as instructed (usually 1:10), and wipe the entire area evenly with a wet mop.
    • For stubborn stains (e.g., oil, ink), gently spot-clean with a soft brush; avoid scratching the surface by rubbing hard.
  3. Rinsing

    • Mop the floor again with clean water to completely remove cleaner residue.
    • Use a water suction machine to dry the floor; ensure it is dry before waxing.
  4. Inspection

    • Confirm the floor is free of water stains, dirt, and is clean and dry. If residue remains, repeat steps 2 and 3 until clean.

IV. Waxing Steps

Note: For the first waxing, it is recommended to apply 1 base coat + 3 top coats (total 4 layers); later, 2-3 layers can be used for maintenance according to usage frequency.

  1. Wax Solution Preparation

    • Choose a special water-based or solid wax (water-based wax dries fast and is eco-friendly; solid wax is more wear-resistant); dilute or use directly as per product instructions.
    • Do not add other solvents by yourself, as this may affect the wax film quality.
  2. Even Application

    • Pour the wax into a clean wax bucket, and apply evenly with a special wax mop or waxing machine.
    • Drag back and forth in an "∞" shape or "cross-covering" pattern to ensure every part of the floor is covered; avoid uneven thickness.
  3. Natural Air-Drying

    • Let the wax layer air-dry for 20-30 minutes; use a fan to speed up drying if ventilation is poor.
    • Do not step on the floor until it is completely dry (about 2-6 hours).
  4. Second Wax Coat

    • To improve gloss and wear resistance, apply a second or third coat after the first coat dries; keep layers dry between applications.
  5. Polishing

    • Lightly polish with a polishing machine to make the gloss more even and the surface smoother.

V. Precautions

  • Avoid strong acid, strong alkali, or solvent-based cleaners, as they will corrode the floor surface.
  • Ensure the floor is completely dry before waxing; otherwise, the wax film may bubble or peel off.
  • Use an appropriate amount of wax: too little causes uneven gloss; too much forms a thick film that reduces wear resistance.
  • Do not work in high temperatures or direct sunlight, as this may cause the wax to evaporate quickly and form spots.
  • Clean tools promptly after work to prevent residual wax from hardening on tools and affecting future use.
  • Regular maintenance: For commercial places, clean once every 1-2 months and wax once every 3-6 months; shorten the cycle appropriately for high-traffic areas.
  • public area plastic floor maintenance

VI. Conclusion

Cleaning and waxing plastic flooring is not a "one-time" task but an important part of periodic maintenance. By following the four steps (preparation, cleaning, waxing, inspection), paying attention to material selection and working environment, you can keep the floor as shiny as new, extend its service life, and enhance the overall image of the space.

Warm reminder: Before actual operation, be sure to read the product manual of the wax used, follow safety operating procedures, and ensure the safety of personnel and the environment. Wish you smooth maintenance and a long-lasting shiny floor!
