With the acceleration of an aging society, nursing homes, as important living places for the elderly, have made the safety and health of their environments a focus of social attention. When selecting plastic flooring, comprehensive consideration must be given to three aspects: safety, environmental protection, and installation & maintenance, to create a safe and comfortable living space for the elderly. Below are the three core considerations:
Due to limited mobility or declining eyesight, the elderly face a significantly increased risk of falling. Plastic flooring must have high anti-slip performance. Especially in humid or oily environments, its surface should adopt a special treatment process that becomes more non-slip when in contact with water, to prevent slipping accidents. In addition, the elasticity and cushioning property of the flooring are crucial — a high-foaming structure can effectively reduce the impact force when falling, lowering the risk of fractures.
It is worth noting that some low-quality products may pose safety hazards due to smooth surfaces or loose materials. When purchasing, priority should be given to products that have passed anti-slip testing and certification. Meanwhile, check whether the surface texture is clear and the anti-slip particles are evenly distributed.
Nursing homes are densely populated, so air quality and floor hygiene directly affect the health of the elderly. Plastic flooring must meet the following standards:
Low formaldehyde emission: Choose flooring that complies with E0 or FCF environmental standards, ensuring the formaldehyde emission is ≤ 0.1mg/L to avoid irritating the respiratory tract.
Antibacterial and bacteriostatic properties: Adopt antibacterial materials with silver ion addition or nanotechnology to inhibit the growth of pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, reducing the risk of cross-infection.
Non-toxic and harmless: Avoid using low-quality materials containing heavy metals like lead and mercury; prioritize brands that have passed national environmental certification.
The performance of plastic flooring depends not only on the material itself but also on construction and post-maintenance:
Professional construction standards: The full-adhesion method must be used for laying. Ensure the adhesive is evenly applied to prevent the flooring from bulging or hollowing. The base floor must be flat (with an error of ≤ 2mm when measured with a 2-meter straightedge) and leveled with self-leveling cement to enhance overall stability.
Daily cleaning: Regularly wipe the flooring with neutral cleaning agents to avoid corrosion by strong acids or alkalis. For stains, local treatment should be done promptly to prevent bacterial growth.
Protective measures: Lay sand and gravel mats at doorways; avoid dragging sharp objects when moving heavy items to prevent scratches on the flooring surface.
The selection of plastic flooring for nursing homes may seem like a simple decoration decision, but it is actually a profound commitment to the elderly's life safety and health. From anti-slip design to environmentally friendly materials, from construction technology to daily maintenance, every link must be treated with rigor. Only by integrating "safety", "health", and "professionalism" throughout the entire process can we create a truly "elderly-friendly" warm home for the elderly.
